OMAHA (DTN) -- Here are the Top 5 things the DTN Newsroom is tracking for the week of June 1. Watch for coverage of these and other topics through the week on our subscription platforms as well as on www.DTNPF.com.
Note that all report release and webinar times are Central Daylight Savings Time unless otherwise noted.
1. More rain coming: The latest U.S. Drought Monitor has notably less brown/orange/red throughout the Plains, a sign the rains of late are significant. While the more severe drought areas have unfortunately stayed persistent, conditions are mainly better than what was forecasted earlier in the year. This week, even more rain is expected across the country, and concerns are moving from dryness on to excess moisture hurting planting and crop development. The Gulf Coast will be especially wet this week.
2. Conditions could create crop shift: As June begins, several areas of Indiana, Illinois and Ohio continue being behind on corn planting. Spring wheat planting has also been hindered in the North. That could create a shift to more soybeans where fertilizer and herbicide choices all it.
3. Canada wildfires: Wildfires in Western Canada continue to increase in number and area affected. From early May to May 31, an estimated 1,454,416 hectares (3,593,940 acres) have burned so far in the country. The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre on Saturday night stated there were currently 188 fires burning in Canada, with 97 of them out of control (https://www.ciffc.ca/…). Both Saskatchewan and Manitoba have declared 30-day state of emergencies for their provinces, and tens of thousands of people have been evacuated in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Smoke from those fires is also a hazard for those working outside, like farmers, and also a danger for livestock. Winds have pushed that smoke into Minnesota and other areas south of the fires, with air quality alerts in some areas. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins announced Saturday that USDA is sending resources to help in Canada, including an airtanker and more than 150 firefighters.
